Typically with a hardtail/chop you run a longer than standard chain. As the front sprocket drives the rear wheel, the chain on the top run tightens. Consequently it slackens slightly on the underside which causes it to flap around. This is especially an issue with a long chain, such as on your hardtail. The roller/tensioner is sprung to absorb and flatten out this underside and means you don't have to wind your chain so tight that you wear it and your sprockets.
