How many RPM's is normal for the choke to boost up on startup? 100-200?

I get about 125 more when cold starting. Is this normal or should it be more? Btw I have bs34 with stock jetting.

Never paid it much mind. I have the thumb control choke located on the left handle bar on both of mine. As soon as she fires I'm backing her off. I like the slide function of the '82 and '83 choke as opposed to the carb choke pre-sets on the earlier models as it gives you some wiggle room.

The reason I ask is that it doesn't seem to give me a lot of boost. I am hoping it will be enough as it is starting to get colder and I will ride till I actually freeze!

I have to take mine off within 10 seconds of startup or mine dies. You have 34's on your 79, so I can't speak to their habits, but I understand that what mine does is pretty normal for a stock 79 special. As long as it starts and will idle, I'd take as little rise as it will sustain, given the sump filter thing.
