Hey guys, first post. I searched about the short and found a lot of info, but found nothing about my mystery plug, any help would be awesome.

I have an 81 XS650 Special Edition. Like pretty much everyone else, I have electrical issues. I picked the bike up for cheap with "a small issue". As soon as I turn the key the main fuse blows within about three seconds.

Prior to purchase, the PO said that it wasn't charging, so he replaced the rotor. After he put everything back together, the short appeared. He "re-wired" most of the bike, and of course it's a mess. I'm still in the process of looking for the short and hoping to get a little advice. Right now my process is to unplug each plug one by one and turn the key to see if it blows. After that fails, my plan is to cut up what's left of the wiring harness to look for damaged wires, I'm hoping someone can talk me out of this with a better way.

My main question is about an empty plug I found in the headlight assembly. In the pictures it is a green female plug with no male anywhere in sight. It has a black and a black and yellow wire coming out of it. I think the black and yellow wire leads back to this relay with a damaged plug.
Could this be the source of my short?? Any insight at would be helpful.

Thanks!

There should be a switch on the clutch perch that goes to the green plug. It allows the motor to be cranked(with e start) in gear with the clutch lever pulled. A safety function. It can be wired around at the green plug if you choose to.

Thanks, do you think the PO already bypassed it since it unplugged?
