Disc Brake Shims

My bike has come down with a bad case of brake squeal which I am trying to eliminate. I tried that red spray on Disc Brake Quiet stuff, which worked for about two days. Now the squeal is back worse than ever.

I do know that I am running without the shims that I hear mention of every once in a while. That said, I pillaged a junk caliper for its pad carrier and the shims pictured below fell out. I'm hoping that someone can tell me which side each shim is designed for. The small one has bent tabs top and bottom.

Yamaha tried an earlier anti-squeal remedy by adding little rubber pads to the brake pad retainers .....

The aftermarket pads on my '78 squeal pretty good so I added these retainers but they didn't help much. Let us know how the pad shims work. I have some but haven't tried them yet.

I've put the shims in; thought it strange that they are cut in such a way that makes it seem as if uneven pressure will be put on the pads but we'll see how it goes after a ride.

They seem to have done the trick, brakes are finally silent!
