The first thing I'd check would be the brush length.

Hmm are you saying it is going flat just sitting or it isn't charging while running? You will need a volt ohm meter to do the tests necessary to narrow down the problem. Curly's charging guide is usually considered to be your best tool the factory manual does pretty good also. I have figured out various charging problems using that.
