Do I need the plastic hub cover on the front wheel

When I was stripping my front wheel for powder coating, the plastic hub cover broke apart. Is this a necessary part or can I skip it?

I ditched mine.

I thought the screw holes for the optional second disk go all the way inside, so the cover keeps water and such from getting inside. You might want to plug those holes at least. Maybe put out a Parts Wanted and someone might have an extra from when they converted over to dual disks.

I just looked at my front hub without the bearings init and they dont go inside

Ah, so I guess it's mostly just to take up space where another disk brake would go..?
