Does spilled gas on powder coat affect finish?

I am wanting to powder coat gas tank flat black but powder coat man says spilled fuel will affect finish. Is there a special powder coat he should use?

He should know I would use gas resistant. paint.

The flat powders do get a sheen on them after PROLONGED exposure to fuel, the flattening agent make the flat powders a bit more porous than the gloss powders. In my opinion, you would be fine as long as you wipe the drips off right away, don't let the fuel soak into the powder, or just go gloss.

^^^^^^^ thats about correct. That would go for paint also. I have a flat tank and have to scotch brite it time to time, from gas spilling. Powder is about the hardest coating you are gona get on metal. Much more durable then paint from a spray gun, unless it is a epoxy base paint, still might be a toss up.. Also satin should be a little less prone to stain then a actual flat.

I had trouble during a first service on my 2007 Buell that the dealer did to me. Various solvents got rid of most of it but not all. I never tried to Scotchbrite it. I would be afraid of removing the powder coat.

Thanks for the replies. This will be a first time build for me and I am glad there is a forum like this.

Below is the 1975 XS650 I will be attempting to rebuild. I bought it for $300 and it has sat in a damp barn since 1985, At least that was the last time the tag was updated.

The bike looks better in the picture than it does in real life. Florida humidity doesn't help but luckily it was parked inside.

It is completely tore down and have just begun getting the small pieces powder coated. I have decided to go with a mild custom look. Kind of a Resto-Mod.
