As a general rule of thumb, what kinds of effects with valves, points, timing, general operation would you expect by either loosening or tightening the cam chain adjustor by a mm or 2?
Too loose or too tight .................bad things can happen such as high wear on the chain, higher wear on tensioner and guide.................timing will change of course, which is not good.
I adjust mine after a trip on the bike, engine is hot. I adjust until in/out motion stops, then back off 3 flats of the adjuster nut. You want a small amount of motion.
On my '73, you adjust the actual barrel (under a dome nut cover), which is threaded and has only two flats on the end... not at all convenient, really, as I have had to turn it with my (gloved) hand.
