Hi guys

I’m having my forks re-chromed on my 81 so I’ve disassembled them and got all the parts on the bench to have a look over them.

On the dampening “taper spindles” both sides the bottoms have digs in the metal all the way round pretty evenly spaced... Is this how they are or do u have an issue?

I’ve attached a picture...

Any ideas?

SPINDLE, TAPER

They shouldn't have those marks, maybe from someones' efforts to wedge in a tool to stop the internals from spinning during bolt removal? The taper acts to stop the fork from bottoming as it gradually stops the oil from transfering.

Thanks for the info, I cant see any damage inside the lower fork so hopefully I can replace them and shouldn’t have any issues. Didn’t have any leaks or issues with the forks before hand. I’m just getting them re chromed as the tops are very pitted.

I welded a suitable bolt on a rod to stop the internals moving while I loosened the Allen wrench which was very easy. I can’t see that causing the damage.

You're probly not the first one to stick his rod in her tube. I have seen issues where if the tapers are not centered in the lower, the tube hits them off center. But those marks look different.
