Work'n on a D model XS for a client.... acid damages.. bad mufflers... needs paint. A check of the engine and electricals systems are made first. Engine strong and all electricals performed within specs. Which is surprising since the negative battery cable is bolted to the battery support bracket and not the frame.
So today, after sonic clean'd the crabs, new kits, new floats, I started to mount them and noticed... copper strands sticking out of the wiring harness. Dang, my day just went into the toy let.
I removed about two feet of old electrical tape and discovered 12-15 inches of black wire (ground) as shown in the attached photo. Closer inspection revealed it didn't affect the adjacent wires.
I'm not the brightest blub on the tree buy my theory is... the negative battery cable wasn't on the frame.. so the black (ground) wire took the amperages, mostly during starter activation.
