It's #22 in the image.
I could buy one on mikesxs for around $45 I believe, but i've been looking on ebay trying to see if I can get some cheaper.
I'm wonder if it HAS to be the stock one, or if I could use say... a Honda CB750 axle holder.
As long as the diameter is the same, right?

sure you could. So long as the attachment bolt spacing and diameter plus the cap's width were also the same as the XS650's
BTW, XS760/850/1100 Standard caps ARE identical.
Or you could carve one out of an aluminum block with a hacksaw and a file.

That part is still available for just over $38 USD from Partzilla. The same part was used on about 50 different years/models. Find a used parts supplier and you could probably have it for $10-$15. That was a joke about carving one, possible, but not really sensible for a critical but cheap part like that.
