Has anyone stripped a black rim from Mike's XS?

Mikes is out of stock on the rim I need, but has the same rim in stock in black. Since it can be a bit of a guessing game when they get stuff back in stock, I thought about buying the black rim and stripping it. Has anyone done this with any luck? What did you use to get it to bare aluminum?

You may be highly disappointed at what you find if you strip one. Often the "appearance seconds" are what gets painted or powder coated.

@tonyc I'm looking for a 2.15 x 18 flanged rim, 36 hole. Part number 34-1902 if I remember correctly.
