I just picked up a bike and engine the vin on the frame starts with 365- and the engine is a 447-

What is curious to me is that the engine side covers are chromed, and I am led to understand that some of the engines had chromed side covers. It has the unlinked bs38 carbs with the chromed tops and bowls and overflow tubes.

Does anyone know anything more about this model?

Thanks in advance.

Got any pics? The frame doesn't sound like a 650 to me...

Not only that, but the rear swingarm is chromed.

I'm going to take pictures right now.

It's definitely an sx650 frame, but the VIN starts with 365. it's a 1974, according to the title.

I think its a 73. The passenger peg loops look like TX to me. The motor is later. The PO must have had the swinger chromed.

Good find. I like it.

Buddy found it, it came with a bunch of parts.

I might have paid a little too much for it, but it spoke to me. It's hard to explain.

This bike has a name already. "Mouth of the Night"

It's going to be gloss black and chrome, with the "M O U T H" from a plymouth name plate on the sides of the tank.

I never heard of chrome case covers from the factory. Must have been a po that did it. It's expensive, so a lucky find if you want shiny covers. If not you should sell the covers and buy other ones to paint.

Looks to be a Standard, (74-79), Frame, In your 4th pic the engine sidecover does not match the motor, if you look at where the forward part of the cover, that covers the sprocket, it is square and the motor has a curve in it, you can see the gap where it is ill fitting. the engine sidecover changed during the 74TXA run. I would say the chrome was done buy someone, wasn't a yamaha feature.

Could the 6 be a G because there is a frame that has a prefix of 3G5 is an XS-SG-P 79/80 3G5-000101 Japanese model. Couldn't find a 365. Check out the model id chart at the bottem of the page in the tech menu.

Thats clearly a 5 and not a G. My 78 came with chrome covers, but most of the chrome was chipped away. If you pull the carbs and the intakes are black, then the engine came from a late model bike.

I think we agree its a 5. It is the 6 that i think is the G. Maybe you need your glasses to read my post properly:):)

Need the Frame and engine no's to help clarify what you have and where it come from.

650Skull is right about the cover being square and the motor being curved in the 4th pic, which means the cover is from an earlier model than the motor.

However, I think it is factory chrome. I also have a set of chrome covers, but unfortunately I have no idea what year they came off of, but they do have the old style square cover, just like sgallaty's.
I also think the change from square to round cover came in 1976 with the C, based on this drawing:
http://www.biker.net/74-76_650_parts/engine/650ABC_casecover.pdf
I have a 1975 with matching numbers and with the square engine and the square cover (non-chrome).

The chrome on the outside of my chrome covers looks ancient, like it is 30 years old. I don't think people who were buying inexpensive bikes 30 years ago were then paying through the nose to have their covers chromed, so I think some 1976 or earlier bikes came with the chrome.

It would be nice to know what the engine number is. It would also be nice if sgallaty would provide the next two numbers of the serial numbers, which are also a clue to year.

I have seen the title for this bike, and I matched it to the frame, but I haven't looked at the engine number yet. The title says 1974, and I have never heard of a title being wrong, so I say it is either a 1974 or a 1973 that was first titled in 1974.

XS650SP 3G5-000101 is a 79 japanese model, also 1980 XS650S 3G5-457101 you'ld be suprised what people would/will chrome lol

Pegs show 74 on 447 model. Round corner engine case is later than the square corner. Not sure when the change was made. Side cases were badly factory chromed only on the european US Custom Specials (round corners). I have had TXAs with both 365 and 447 model codes. Both the 3G5s, as listed by jayel, were (round corner) japanese models and not likely to have been exported.

Yes, I posted this because the serial number was not on the list. I thought you all would find this interesting.
