Hopefully just one more question thread. (headlights on/off)

My first motorcycle.
This weekend I'm replacing the alternator rotor, (yes I know I should invest in the PMA swap)

But hopefully after the new rotor the charging system will let my battery live!

Anyway, When i turn the key on, the tail light comes on, but no headlight. Also, the blinkers don't blink, just a constant, While the bike is running the the blinkers go and the headlight is on, is this typical for a 1980 xs650 special?

Right, key on and the tail light comes on but the headlight is still off untill you activate the system by either the starter or the kickstart. The blinkers should come on and blink but will stay solid if the battary voltage is low.....untill it's running.
