How can I dial this in and eliminate kick back and hard starts?

I hear you 5twins!

I ride sometimes with a friend who has an 80 SG. He understands the choke to get it started and it starts quickly. He just doesn't seem to realize that you need to turn up the the throttle to keep a proper idle rpm.

His bike will sit there barely running at maybe 800 rpm until it warms up. I've mentioned to him that I always turn up my throttle speed screw a few turns, but he seems to be happy doing it his way.

Yes, twisting the throttle before starting does nothing.

These bikes are extremely easy starting..............I barely hear the starter motor, its so quick.

I don't fool with the idle speed screw anymore. I used to when I first got the bike but I eventually found just the right setting where it will idle cold without stalling but not idle too high once warm. Also, and this seems to be the case with any bike I get, I got used to the bike and it got used to me (my "lead wrist", lol). I find it always takes some time, a season or two, for me to learn the bike and get it fine tuned, and for it to "break in" to my riding style.
