I was given a 1970 XS1 engine. When I went to pick up the engine He had 2 LH engine covers there. One from the 1970 and one from a 1978. By mistake he gave me the cover from the 78. Am I able to use this on my XS1 engine?

No even though the clutch actuator is different I believe the part number changes over to the new number ie it's a bolt on replacement. rod should work too.

from boats.net

This Yamaha 1T3-16340-00-00 PUSH LEVER ASY part is also used on these models and components:

1970 XS1 CLUTCH
1971 XS1B CLUTCH
1972 XS2 CLUTCH
1973 TX650 CLUTCH
1974 TX650A CLUTCH TX650A - XS650B - C
1975 XS650B CLUTCH TX650A - XS650B - C
1977 XS650D CLUTCH XS650D - E - E006501- - F
1978 XS650SE CLUTCH
1978 XS650SE-11 CLUTCH
1978 XS650SE-114241 CLUTCH XS650SG
1979 XS650SF CLUTCH
1979 XS650_2F CLUTCH
1980 XS650G CLUTCH
1980 XS650SG CLUTCH
1981 XS650H CLUTCH
1981 XS650SH CLUTCH
1982 XS650SJ CLUTCH
1983 XS650SK CLUTCH

So yeah no problem.

The circular disc stator cover will interchange, but the large left cover will not properly interchange as there was a change to the location of the lower mount screw, below the clutch pushrod region, to accomodate the electric starter. The cover will fit, but you'll be missing an important screw retension strength.

(Took forever to find this::))

Oh crap, yeah; 2many is 100% right, forgot about bolt hole bingo. Wouldn't be impossible to drill the hole but why not swap covers in the mail if it's a distance aways?

Yes, TooMany is right.
When I answered, I was referring to the stator cover, which is what you asked about. If you had asked about the engine left side cover, or the left crankcase cover... I might have answered differently?

three covers stacked

xs1 covers.jpg

Top cover is a from a 70 XS1

Second cover?? my guess is a replacement early cover from the Yamaha parts dept, machined from a late style casting. I guess that's why the late cover has the vestigial bump for the early bolt location so they could continue to make replacement covers for the early bikes.

Bottom cover is a later style cover

So If I cant get the original cover back, I can drill out the missing bolt hole and everything else should work fine. Forgive my ignorance on the subject. I have always had British bikes. I've never had a Japanese bike before. This motor was on an old racing bike and I wound up getting just the motor in a trade.

"I can drill out the missing bolt hole and everything else should work fine."

Well not quite..........

That bolt hole is ALSO drilled for the bushing that locates the cover (and the clutch mechanism) precisely where they need to be to line up with the clutch shaft.
IMHO trade is still the hot tip, the cover he has will have the same problem fitted to a late engine.
