Hi,

I have an 81' xs 650 Special and I was told by the previous owner that my rotor/charging system was shot. So I went out and bought a Hugh's Handbuilt PMA kit. I also bought a new wire harness since I did not want to mess with my whole electrical system since it was a bit chopped. I was also told to use a Pamco ignition but I have no clue which one to buy. Any recommendations and what else is it that I need to replace to have a complete/ solid ignition system. budget is about $300 for an ignition
Thanks

As far as I know you just need PMA + Pamco to complete your charging system. Oh, and a battery or capacitor. There are diagrams all over this site.

You will need a Pamco that comes with the advance unit, one of these three:
http://www.mikesxs.net/product/14-0902.html - Good
http://www.mikesxs.net/product/14-0912.html - Better
http://www.mikesxs.net/product/14-0915.html - Best

If I'm not mistaken, though, the latter two (or maybe just the last one?) carry risk of blowing the coils if you have a plug wire disconnected when starting/running the engine. But if you're not prone to things like that, I think the benefits outweigh the risk

EDIT: MikesXS is out of stock

Hopefully the stock situation at mikes will improve next year. It's about as reliable as tulips in spring; several critical "finish my ride" items go out of stock for 2 months when riding season starts. A couple of used advance units were in the classifieds yesterday..........

I have not had a problem with mikes yet(knock on wood). That is true, I am in need of critical parts like my ignition and a clutch push rod.

desmodromic,

Well, you can use your stock coil if it's in good shape, so if you can source the advancer and advance rod along with the brass bushings, you are in business. MilesXS does have the rod and bushings.
