The 70-73 were a weaker frame. Not much bracing in major stress points.
In 74 they added much more support to these weak spots.
In 78 they made a few small changes when they started the Specials. They did a few more changes in 80. Most of the later changes where to make it look more like a Harley. Or in more modern terms, a cruiser.

Apart from the changes made after the 70-73 early years (about which I defer), the principal changes made were in association with the changes made when the "Special" was configured beginning with the 1978 SE. That being done the established frame design became what we call now the "standard".
Quite a few differences really.....most noticeable may be the passenger footpeg mount....hook versus loop. Blue
