Hi all,

I am looking for a Standard tank for my bike, a 1980 Special. I am trying to determine how to identify early model tanks. From the posts I have seen, it has been said that anything 1975 or later will fit on my bike, but the earlier ones will not.

Now I have a pending deal going (long distance) to get a tank that looks good. The tank is in primer, and the seller has said that there are no identifying marks on it, nor does he know the year.

Is there any way to determine what model year this tank is in order to see if it will fit my bike? Some secret code somewhere I can tell him to look for? Measurements?

The tank has dual petcocks, and the petcocks appear to be mounted on raised bosses from the surface of the tank. Can't tell if they are vacuum or not.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Any pics of this tank? I know the '77's have a platform that the petcocks set on. Maybe the hole to hole distance in MM's for the petcock mounting screws might help.

To add.....a pick of the gas cap would help too.
