intake hose barb?

what do the hose barbs on the intake of my 78 special connect to? I have bs 38's.

they connect to each petcock. the 78 came with vacuum operated petcocks and the barb provides vacuum pressure from the engine to open and close the valves in the petcocks.

I have a new tank with a single petcock, should I just eliminate these with a plugged hose? Thanks

Yes. Or, you can buy rubber caps, but they don't last long. Vinyl (clear) hose holds up well -- I simply connect the two barbs to each other with a short piece of vinyl hose.
