is this a normal noise coming out my engine ?

Could it be the plastic strip has come off the aluminum rail(cam chain guide)??
Have you got plastic bits or aluminum flakes in the oil?

The tensioner rod is supposed to have a copper or metal/rubber damper washer on it. If it's missing, you can get a ticking sound. Pull the rod out and have a look.

Hey, gents... on this topic, do all years require damper washers? (biker.net isn't loading for me on this computer.) I don't have my '73's assembly in front of me at the moment, but I didn't notice yesterday (when I pulled it to replace the gasket) whether it has a washer. Just thought I'd ask before I reinstall tomorrow.

Thanks -

TC

The 73 with the idler wheel instead of the rub rail doesn't have one in the schematic that I can see.

The adjuster screw, plunger, and spring can be pulled out any time with the housing still installed on the motor. If you have a "clicking" noise that valve and cam chain adjustments won't cure, you could try adding a copper washer.
