Just bought my first xs650. She's a 1975, I want to do a cafe build but what do you all recommend doing before I start the tear down?

Get it registered in your own name, get it running proper, go through all the suggested adjustments and so on, if you can, ride it a bit on the road - only when it is starting and going good is it time to start changing things - also gives you a base line for how effective your improvements are.
Pictures of what you are starting with, please.

Notice the missing rear shock...

Looks can be deceiving. It's barly rideable. It runs rough off throttle and it just feels so lose. Everything seems worn and in need of replacing. Clutch is shit, throttle sticks, brakes are crap, suspensions is shot.

I would start by getting rid of the stupid loooong forks, bars & pipes - replace with standard items from Mikes XS. Get it running properly, some decent shocks & bronze s/arm bushes & you'll have a cool scooter...or you could donate it to me...
