Yes, drilling. I would try a small EZ-out along with plenty of heat and penetrating oil. Those carbs look nasty. Sure they're worth saving?

I know! I was shocked when I opened them up...The bike ran well before, but I recently switched to straight pipes and pods so I was going to up the jet size. Now i've got myself a problem that I didn't need....

Are those 1980 BS34s? If so, that shouldn't be a brass plug there, it should be rubber, and Mikes does sell the rubber version. Your pilot jet is under that so if you drill it, don't go too deep, stop just as you get through it.

I honestly don't even know what kinda they are...I'd assume they're BS38's.

They're on a '76..but they're not '76 carbs. Tomorrow I have to go out there and pull them off again and find out what they are, but if I replace those brass with rubber plugs that would be great!

They can't be BS38s because they mount their mains and pilots into the float bowl, not the main carb body like yours. Post some pics of the whole carbs and maybe we can make some educated guesses.

thanks, any help would be great.

Also, where are they vacuum ports to synching the carbs with a manometer?

Well, they're Mikuni CV carbs alright but not any that were ever used on a 650. They may be from an XS400 or maybe a Suzuki 400/425/450.

Vacuum ports are usually on the manifolds but they didn't appear until '78. Your manifolds look different from 650 ones anyway, probably a match for those carbs.

So what do you suggest...keep them and try to find jets that will work with straight pipes and pods? The jets on these carbs at 132.5 Mains, 42.5 Pilots, but I have been getting large backfires out the pipes.

....or try and find a set of BS34's or BS38's?

Well, for me, I don't know much about those other carbs but do know lots about the original 650 ones. I would get originals. For you, if you don't know much about ANY carbs, I guess it really doesn't matter. The jets should just be common Mikuni jets so getting them won't be a problem. Knowing what sizes to use might be. You usually base re-jetting on what was stock in the carbs. To know what was stock, you need to know what carbs they are.

Here are some better pictures of the carbs, I just pulled them off the bike. The jets on these carbs at 132.5 Mains, 42.5 Pilots, but I have been getting large backfires out the pipes as soon as I roll on the throttle.

I have been unable to find any serial number or anything on these...I am learning for sure, and don't know much about carbs but I know that the previous owner took off the stock ones and put these one. It would be nice to find out what these are off of because i'm not sure where to even find jets for these things.

From what I can tell, they look very similar to BS34 carbs off of the XS400, although not exactly the same...

Whooshy swooshy those are some mongrels alright. I am thinking they are BS34s but they were on some other bike maybe (just maybe) a KZ750 twin but who knows, cares? Kawasaki used threaded brass plugs to cover the air jets on several of their bikes. I guess if they are working get that plug out clean em and figure out a way to replug the hole. But I really think you should find a set of XS650 carbs.

It's obvious they were adapted to fit. The spacing between them was originally different (less). You can see that by the fact that they needed to extend the throttle shaft linkage on the left carb to reach the right one. The throttle cable holder looks like a fab job too.

From looking at the 3rd pic, they appear badly out of sync. The throttle plates look to be open differing amounts. That may be the cause of the backfiring.

Thanks for all your help...i appreciate you sharing your knowledge.

I just posted a wanted add in the classifieds looking for proper carbs for the xs650. I figure there's no point in screwing around with carbs that don't even belong on the bike.

Which carbs are suggested....the BS34's or the BS38's?

Im almost 100% certain I have those same carbs and they came off a 82 engine .. there Identical as far as I can see .. im holding them right now

I know nothing about them sorry .. but they have the bolt in the bowl and the writing on the tops just as these .. and they are not bs34s best I can tell you ... I planned to use them though if that stands for anything
