i have a 79 xs 650 special, im wanting to install a new harness and was looking at mikesxs. it seems i need to determine if my 79 is a xs6502f/sf or a xs650f. how do i go about that? it has the wired in fuse panel that sits on top of the battery with the glass fuses.

is there a way to tell by the vin number? i need to get this done so i can get lights operational.any help would be greatly appreciated!!

There are plenty of vin to year charts out there. The only thing is most are very cinfusing for the 79 year. With three models and Yamaha not using a series of numbers for each model they used the same series for all three.
As far as I can tell by looking at wiring diagrams all the 79's were the same.
On your harness it should have a piece of white plastic with the part number on it. It should be close to where the fuse box wire bundle joins the main harness.
Use that number to choose te new one.
I might suggest building your own harness. You can simplify the harness by eliminating a lot of the stuff not needed. Like the RLU, light checker, self canceler.
