hello fellow xs members. i picked up my first bike in march sent it away to be built. had a bad experience and now im personally working with a new builder to build my dream. the bike started as a stretched brat was fun to ride , but the bug hit me , i bought a second xs a 78 and was going hard tail so i purchased a 4 inch stretch 3 inch drop David Bird loop hard tail. since i was unhappy with the brat build it became the donor bike for the hardtail, and here is the start of the build and id like to thank MCW Racing out of NJ for the hand and inspiration will post pics in a few moments. im having an issue with that

more to come

we used solid bar on the bottom of the frame and we cut old 7/8 handle bars for the top area by the rear drops , we left a gap to tie in the slugs and the edges of pipe. both myself and Ryan are certified welders. we still have to fit steel under the back bone and brace it to the downtubes.

Will you have room for the rear wheel? Doesn't look like you will have enough tire clearence

i should have plenty of room for the rear wheel , we pulled measurements and i know it will be tight when the axle is all the way forward . i should have mock up picks up this week , my concern will be clearance of the fender

here are some pics of the fender mounted and rear tire on in place .. also a twist on a sporty tank.. let me know what you guys think..

I really like the frame mod. I am curious why u decided to modify the bottom portion instead of just welding it as the instructions suggest.

I ask because I have frame the PO chopped for a TC hardtail but would rather have a david bird so I was considering the same kinda mod.

thank you . i just really liked the clean look of the frame going straight instead of the triangle brace plates . plus it is a chop . so i started chopping to get the desired look

I am doing the same thing with my dave bird loop. I didn't like the weird triangle gussets so I decided to just fab up the bottom portion myself. I left the dimensions the same though. Just replaced the bottom portion.

i stayed within a half inch of the length from when i purchased it . i bought it as a 4 inch stretch 3 inch drop when we had the frame in the jig we played with the drop some the whole bike sits pretty low now.. like a drop seat should .. do you have any pics of your build?

Here are a few of them in progress.

It just looked gross where it all met up.

quick mock up of what Im working with on the lower frame rails.

The wood portion is a stand in for the steel to be used.

make sure before its welded...take plenty of measurements and double check them.. and again.. thats alot of filling in with weld on the bottom .. id wait to get ahold of some 1 1/8 inch tube so you only have butt welds

I don't have any of the replacement tubing on the frame yet. Its just some electrical conduit and scrap tubing right now. The tail is tacked in several places with simple bracing. The rear axle position is solid. Im going to add tubing slowly so I don't have to put the whole thing in a Jig (which I don't have).

It just sucks waiting for steel. The place near me is closed for 3 weeks during the holidays.

i was lucky enough to have a jig to throw it in and a DIY tc bro kit to hack up for tubing and some bends. hopefully i will be near the paint stage soon... waiting on a few key parts .. some powder coating and get it ready for spring.. which will come quick..
