Motor Interchangeable Question

In keeping with my belief to ask here before spending money.....

I have a option to get a 1978 engine for a very good deal. Does the majority of the bits and pieces swap around on my 1974?

My intent is when I tear down the original and use both to build up a runner. Full knowing that I will still need some new parts

Highly interchangable. Tranny gears as a set. Later cam tensioner may be better.

The big change was in 77. The gearbox gear shafts profile was chnaged. The gears wont interchange to the other gearbox shafts if by chance a dog breaks
