Motor Rebuild

Well I found out my problem, the PO left out the spring! No wonder the damn thing wasn't going into neutral! I'll pick up a couple springs to see what works best and get her back together.

OK got the bottom end buttoned up but there were two things that I wanted to show that you may have never touched.
One is the starter assembly and the other is the shifter shaft
Starter goes from right side of motor to left then back to the right who designed this???? Ok as you can see in the pictures the shaft goes threw the motor and that is what connects the starter to the gears that turn the crank. Next you got the start gear reduction on left side which starter turns and it turns the shaft which turns the gear to the crank. Now the fun gears these are the ones that skip all the time but again poor design only part of the gear touches the crank when it spins and the teeth round and the spring weekends and so on and so on SO YOU SPEND MONEY FOR NEW.
OK next if you never taken one out the shifter shaft. Have to pull clutch basket but it comes right out. Left side got a washer and a clip and you can slid it out once you drop down the shift arm. Goes back just as easy.
Next and last the oil sump just take out the bolts tap it a little and out it comes goes back just as easy. Don't forget new filter.
Well that's all I got done today have to order new starter gear all 5 that I have bad marks on them. Next I will do the clutch for you.

I will send you a picture but it may just be the trans. A lot of guys have the same problem trying to get it into neutral. I had a 1977 that the only way to get neutral was to kill the motor. Later trans are much better 79/80/81/82 never had problem finding neutral but I will post a picture of what comes out when you take it apart.
I just checked and by the diagram it comes out threw the top. There was a tread on here that a guy had a broken bolt that leaked.
You have the bolt spring and pin.

All transmissions from 74 up the same. Except midway 77 where the splines of the shafts were changed. But sets and half sets will swap back and forth. Gear teeth never changed. Clutch packs did change on the newer ones and the worm actuator and push rod assembley. I have a 74 engine with the original trans. Neutral is easy to find even hot. I have a 1980 engine with one set of gears pre 77 and one set from the 1980. Works fine.
