I installed a new alternator rotor on my 81 and it started and died twice and now the reserve lighting device is just clicking. Not sure what to do. I am home from school and this is prob the last weekend before i move thatill have time to fix it. Also I tried my new reg/rec and didn't get any different results. seems like there is less pressure when I try to kickstart it.

Is the battery fully charged? I can't say I ever heard the RLU click. The RLU is mounted on the frame cross member just behind the battery.

Yes it's charged and that is definitely where it's coming from you can hear it and feel it

If you want to remove it jump these wires.

Got frustrated walked away and came back about 30 minutes later and it fired right up and is charging

The best thing you can do with that RLU is remove it. Instructions are here .....

You can use the plug from the unit to fab up a plug-in "jumper" .....
