Breaking down my 78 engine and i am having trouble getting the cam chain tensioner guide screws to break free(the four inside the case) also can't seem to get the clutch spring screws loose either. What do yall use to do this? any tricks/tips.

You need one of those hand held impacts you hit with a hammer. On the clutch spring screws especially, don't even try without one or you'll bugger the screw heads all up. They also require the larger size Phillips bit (clutch screws anyway), a #3. Using the smaller, more common place #2 size will bugger them up as well.

where can i get hand held impacts at?

Anywhere... Home Depot, Sears, Ace, etc. No idea why those cam chain tensioner bolts are philips head, I'm at the same point as you, I plan on replacing them with allen or hex head.

Well, they can use phillips screws there. Phillips in the side covers was not such a good idea.
