no muffler in CA?

My '78 came with the muffler cut off so it's just have the headers. Can I ride in CA without a muffler or do I have to put one on?

by law your suppossed to have them. having said that i see bikes all the time with no muffler on them. it all depends on the cop and how load it actually is and where in calif you live. after talking to a friend ( i plan on not running mufflers) most of the time he gets stopped the cops are pretty cool and usually just ask him questions on the bike. but if you do get pulled over by the wrong cop i believe its just a fix it ticket. i dont think it will be a problem. i see all these 2 fast 2 furious cars all day long that are loud as hell.
