no spark

I made a mistake and bought a 1976 yamaha xs650 that was a mess with wiring and was definitely a project. They put an electric start system from I believe an 81 or 82 and I have no spark and it is causing problems. Is the system n/a with my bike year and what should I do to fix the issue.

When did it run last? By electric start system, do you mean electronic ignition? Can you kick start it? What do you measure for voltage on your battery?
