Ok. Real noob, so go easy. 79 model, in UK.
So broken it all down and have engine on a stand... Currently degreasing the mucky engine.

Engine covers have been chromed, yet are scratched up.
Main block was painted but is flaking pretty bad.
Fins and up look raw ali, but pretty dark and dingy.

Questions... Raw ali is looking dark... And ideally I want bright Ali finish. Engine is currently still in fact, so what's the best way get s nice finish. I have no soda blasting sets (plus building it in my IT office, so doubt that'll be an option!). Wire brushing it seems the right choice, but won't that leave a scratched up finish? If brass, it will leave it tinged, stainless too hard surely, mild will leave bits to rust. So what brushes do I use? Do it by hand or rotary tool?

After its done how do I seal it to maintain it?

Or should I be thinking acids? Ali cleaner?

Main block, should I paint strip it, de grease, brush... Then repaint or leave?

Covers.. Tempted to strip chrome and do polished ali or paint. Waste of time?

In short... In well out of my depth, want to do it nice and right. Not showroom, but nice. Help so much appreciated.
