Many years ago I read a museum article where after cleaning the rust stains off the chrome they heated the chrome and applied micro-crystalline wax. The idea being that the heating drives out any residual moisture and also melts the wax which then penetrates the pits and cracks to prevent further rusting.

Does anyone know the details for this method e.g. is the micro-crystalline wax the stuff from a hobby shop for candle making?

Thank you.

Thank you for this "wrenchjohns". It is very similar to what I read years ago. I will try the micro-crystalline candle wax as it is essentially water free and melts easily.

In the sculpture hobby, its used for sculpture before the lost wax castings. My wife has some. Its granules are very small, and gives great detail.

Like any wax, micro-crystalline is impermanent. You are going to have to keep on re-applying it, especially if it is exposed to sun, rain, wind... It will immediately burn off of parts that get hot.

Silicone spray from Walmart on a rag. Over and over for the rest of your life.
