Prime engine before painting it?

This may be a dumb question and if it is feel free to let me know.... But when painting the engine are you guys priming it first? Thanks for the help!
 
for us visual learners anyone got some pics from painting their engine? before and after/during pics possibly?
 
Here is mine, the taped off part is silver painted.since VHT needs to be baked to cure I builta box with insulation board and used a heat gun,ran ot though a few cycles of heating and cooling.so far its held up great.

Funny thing I did this last spring, now I'm rebuilding the whole bike and have spent the past month striping and polishing everything. I get bored easily .lol
 
I paint all my engines with Duplicolor engine paint, no primer. Degrease, wire wheel with a drill motor, blow off with compressed air, spray and wipe with a prep solvent, mask and spray away. Let the engine warm up a few cycles and bingo done.
