So I am looking to replace the regulator/rectifier in my PMA system with something of a little higher quality, in hopes it will hash out some of the problems I've been dealing with as of late. I am looking for quality alternatives to the cheapo one that is currently installed. I read in a former thread that modern R1 reg/rec's are usable, but would like some input before I buy something.

There were some good discussions about series versus shunt regulators awhile back, with some recommend part numbers. Type "series shunt regulator" in that Google box. It'll bring up about 12 threads you should read...

Apparently, the reg/rec on the 2014 V-Strom 1000 is the same, but good for 50 amps.

These are designed for permanent magnet alternators, not excited field, like a stock XS setup.
