So I have done some reading on the theory of re-phasing and it seems pretty much common sense. I am just wondering why they didn't design the engine this way to begin with? Is there a reason the original engineers decided against having the smoothness and efficiency of the rephased design?

I always though it was because of the ignition technology and simple engineering at the time...it being points, you couldn't get the firing order from points that is required for the 277 firing order. Thanks PAMCO Pete!

it's based on a design from the 50's. Probably far cheaper to design cranks that way at the time.. Almost every Brit twin uses the same crank design of 360* (triumph, BSA, Norton, etc). I think the 360* crank is one of the neatest things of these bikes.

There is plenty of 4 cylinder bikes to pick from if i want smooth.

Jack that is all wrong, tried that fucked a points plate before discovering that its the wrong way round, maybe right if you twisted crank in the oppisite direction it maybe right S B

Well looks like we were in the same boat, what was your seat #
