Hey guys
Has anyone ever tried to replace the steel inserts for the sprocket bolts in a rear hub ?
One of mine is stripped and a P/O tried to drill it. Are they pressed in Threaded maybe ?
Thanks

I believe they are cast into the aluminum. IE the steel inserts are placed in the mold and the aluminum is poured around them. I think that's how the drum liner is done also. IMHO to save the hub, if there still is some steel left, TIG weld the hole shut, drill and tap it. You can use a sprocket as a centering guide so it should be "easy" to do. You could MIG the hole shut also but i "think" mig weld is harder to machine than tig weldment.

I would fill the hole a bit at a time, let the heat spread out into the aluminum between weld sessions..

It needs to go to a machine shop to be drilled out and a threaded insert installed. That would be the easiest way to fix it.

These hubs are quite plentiful. Probably cheaper just to replace it.
