rebel shocks on xs650

So i got my shocks and started to put them on my 79 xs650 but the damn shock hits the chain guard and won't fit. My question is when you put on the rebel shocks did you remove the chain guard???

On my '80 s model I noticed that they also hit the brake and line a little bit. I'm planning on spacing mine outward a hair. I'm wondering if those covers on the shock could be removed.

Just alter the chain gurad. My father had to grind a little bit away for the shocks to fit.
