Goodday,

I'm trying to diagnose mycharging system, figured out therectifier is shot, but verifying the functioing of the regulator is trickier. What voltage does it send to the rotor when energised, i'mgetting just over 6 volts. Is this right? Thinking of building asolid stateversion, if thisone dies.

Thanks

The regulator ( 1970 to 1979) sends voltage from +13 volts at idle, decreasing to +6 volts with rpm at 3000. If you are reading 6 volts, that means the rotor is getting minimum current flow so minimum magnetic field.

Best thing is to use an NOS automotive solid state regulator. I use a Standard VR-115...............it keeps my voltage constant at 14.2 volts accept at idle, when the voltage will go down to 13.5 volts, which is normal. The VR-115 is for 70 to 79 bikes. Some other ones are GP Sorensen R292 and Wells Manufacturing VR727.

You can google those brands and shop around as the prices for these NOS varies considerably. I paid only $9.99 (plus $8.00 shipping) for the VR-115 back in 2008.
