Removing tachometer shaft

Is there a reason I can't remove this shaft? It's in the right side crankcase cover by the oil filter. Runs at a diagonal. That is the tachometer shaft right? Oil pump will still operate? I want to plug this and weld a stud to the plug for a spring return on my brake pedal.

You can remove it,mbut there is a small washer on the end down in there that wont come out with the shaft. Take the clutch cover off, then pull it. Oil pump will still work.
