I recently purchased (within the last month) the MikesXS Old Style Tank Badge for "Specials". they look real nice and gave it a look I liked. However some gas spilled on one when filling, just a small amount on the tank ran down onto the badge. The gasoline had a bad reaction with the plastic and developed what look like stress cracks in the badge. It really looks awful. I contacts MikesXS and they said they have not heard of the problem. They said it's not something they will cover under warranty. The badges cost $30 on sale plus shipping.

I purchased a cafe style seat from, MikesXS. it's a real good looking seat. However it arrived in box that looked like it had been thrown across the room. It had a big dent in the box and the seat pan was slightly dented on the back end. This is not MikesXS's fault but seems they could have packed it better. I straitened the seat pan myself with my fingers. Later I noticed that the chrome strip on it had come loose in two places, in a place unrelated to the for mentioned dent. I removed the strip and it looks good without it. The strips are attached very poorly and look cheap. I did not contact MikesXS about this because I expected no support based on the badges discussion above. I think I will get a vinyl repair kit and fill in the little hole for the strip attachment bolts.

I purchased a clutch lever bracket because my old one was really worn. It's not expensive and not a big deal but the pivot bolt was the wrong length, too short, so when tightened it would make the lever unmovable. I used the original pivot bolt and it worked fine with it. The old bolt shoulder was a couple millimeters longer than the one from MikeXS. I figure that this is poor quality control. I did not contact Mikes because I fixed it myself and because of previous support on the badges. However had I not had the old parts I would have been in a tough spot.

Otherwise I have purchased several other small parts from MikesXS and been generally pleased.

MikesXS looks like a good parts resource, but I will be careful what I buy from them in the future.

Being in the UK I buy all my stuff from Heiden Tuning in Holland, they are dealers for MikesXS parts.

As above some stuff is good but some is crap. Avoid the fork gaiters, the label states they're for a CB550 Honda and they fit very badly on the XS. Gear lever rubber is rubbish too, it just split down the joint when I was fitting it.

If you don't mind buying form the UK then try 'Yambits' on the internet, they do stock some XS650 parts and the quality is generally good.

I have the fork gators too but I have not installed them yet. However MikesXS said they will not fit the Specials very well and to use a piece of radiator hose. I noticed they are for Honda.

I got the brake and clutch covers too. The rubber is really a weird shiny plastic. However they did not split when I put them on, I used WD40 to make then slide on easier. Will check out Yambits. Thanks!

For the most part, I have been very happy with MikesXS and their parts...have easily spent $1K with them during the course of a project.

However, I had a terrible experience with their wiring harness. They have a flawed design in that the kill switch is moot...they have wires connected where they shouldn't. I had to strip the entire harness down to troubleshoot, but finally figured out the problem.

When I emailed them letting them know that this is a serious liability...crickets.

In closing...they mostly have great quality stuff. However, a few of the items are sketchy at best.

PS - I have their fork gaitors (w/radiator hose). It isn't terrible.

Huh, wonder if they still sell the wiring harness with the known defects.

Well...since I wrote them and notified them of the issue...I assume "yes." They have always been responsive when I want to buy something...but not when I find a problem. I seriously doubt they would take their harnesses apart to fix the issue.

These are the ones I found to have problems:

Screws for "points" ignition.................thread was too short

Throttle shaft screws..................wrong thread

Carb intake manifold barbs..................rubber cap splits within a year

Carb intake manifolds........................very poor fit, do not seal well causing high idle and chirping

ATU bob weights spring..................tension is not correct as compared to OEM

Bought some knob assemblys for the metal side covers. The hole for the roll pin was going the wrong direction so the knob ended up being vertical instead of horizontal when locked down. A small thing but annoying.....they sent me some replacements right away.

Update: They sent the same wrong parts again. Add another item to the don't buy from Mike's list.

I buy everything from 650 Central which i believe he is supplied by Mikes. The stud on one of my coils snapped when installing, MMM sent me a replacement free of charge. He didn't want the old coil back in exchange. I am currently on the waiting list for a replacement manual petcock which is currently on back order. One of mine is leaking and we've determined that it is a defect somewhere. MMM's customer service and one on one interaction is outstanding. I'll give him as much business as I can. I'll order from Mikes only if MMM doesn't have the part I need.

Cmyoch, I agree with you on M.M.M. This is where my business goes. On many items 650 Central does not list but he stocks be sure to ask him. Tony C

throttle/clutch cables - will be replacing soon due to the stories of breaking.
kicker arm - great
green monster coil - good
AGM bat. - good
cam chain - good
cam chain riviter tool - good
carb innards - good (if you order the right shit:banghead:)
piston rings - good
athena gasket kit - took some trimming on some parts, but good
bowl gasket - took some trimming but good, untill you have to take the bowl off.
oil filters - good
clutch plates - good
wire coupler - good
drum shoes - not so good, but that may be my fault
brake switch - good (so far)
sprockets - good
advance pin - had to file down to make it seat right
pamco - good, but come on

thats all that i can think of right off the top of my head, i know theres more, but i cant think of it right now, which i guess should be a good thing right?

come to think of it i havent really had many problems with mikesxs besides when the new ownership took over and there were all those problems that have since been cleared up. the sale items and new items part of the page is cool too.

im about the replace wheel bearings/seals and neck bearings, fork seals, choke dust seal, choke plunger the new caliper, master cylinder rebuild kit, rear axle and nut.
any of these that should be avoided would be great to know now.
also does the new caliper Part #08-6008 come with pistons?...im guessing that it would, but you never know. and im too lazy to wait (haha) for a email convo with them about it.

Like anything. Some of his stuff is cheap because it's junk, and some is just a good bargain.

Stay away from the foot peg rubbers. They fall apart.
Also, if you get that chrome top end bolt kit, go easy on those oil feed bolts. One of mine broke. I wrote MikesXS and he said I over torqued it and would only accept an exchange if I could prove there was a fault in the bolt.
Had one of those 2" LED Speedos go bad. He said I had a bad cable or speedo drive.
Maybe the new owners are better. It's easier to get my 12 yo to clean her room than get a refund/exchange out of Mike.

I bought a 18" aluminum rear rim and stainless spokes from Mike's late last year. Shipping was resonable and fairly quick, but the packing could have been better. The box was pretty beat up by the FEDUPS guys. I also wanted to buy a 21" rim and stainless spokes but the rims were out of stock. I emailed Mikes inquiring about availability and was told the rims would be in stock in March. So far, they still don't have them.

The fitting for the bottom of the oil pipe can be bad, I'm guessing poor quality control. This one my buddy got couldn't even be used the threads were so poor .....

I had the local dealer order fork seals. Only about $6 ea. and oem Yamaha packaging. Don't know if Mike's are good or bad.

Well hello guys , I order stuff from heiden , again its all the same stuff , my last order im very happy with , the seal kit was spot on and everything is oil tight even the clutch push rod seal (i did the bush too) i also bought 850 head and base gasket and they look fine , id have liked the base gasket more if it had been a little thicker but sayin that it has sealed fine and was a good fit likewise the head gasket ! i bought a tacho drive blanking plug thats quite neat , its misting but so was the old tacho drive so prob my clutch cover is tired ! I bought the uprated clutch thrust washer and i now have a clutch that don't drag , very pleased , i did dress the basket faces as well so prob a bit of both and im running Lucas friction plates sourced from my local bike shop as have used them in the past and they have prooven to be very good , less slip and less drag , bonus !! I would highly recomend the aftermarket oil filters , the sump one looks better and stronger than stock and is slightly cheaper , the upper filter looks identical to stock and is much cheaper !!
A while ago i did order some other bits that i was less happy with , i bought a gear lever it was ok and fitted and worked but it did have that cheap made in china look , and i bought some rubber bits , footrest dampers etc. and they are ok but are degrading faster than i would expect !
I would say 99% what i have bought has been absolutely fine just the niggles on the chassie parts , engine parts i have found spot on and im gratefull that they are available still , a point we should all remember ! I have found that quite a lot of genuine parts are still available and if not a little ebay hunting will often return results !
So far after my engine rebuild i have done 300 miles with no problems so pretty chuffed , cough , a kid in a garden shed can do better than a "specialist" in wolverhampton , cough , sorry groggy throte !!

I bought some rubber items from Heiden too and they were crap to be honest. I bought the same stuff again from Yambits at Boroughbridge near York and the stuff they sold was far better quality. I see they are advertising more stuff for the XS 650 now too.
