I am currently heading towards mounting a xs 750/850 standard tank on my xs650 (don't remember which standard model one it was) that has pretty nice factory paint job. The paint is black with silver panels towards the front with yellow YAMAHA decals. The silver panel on one side has a lot of rust specs visible. I tried the Rust-X product and that helped some. Did a claying also, and more applications of Rust-X. While some of them were removed, a lot are still there. I presume (from my searches) that the rust specks are embedded either in the clear coat or paint. I do not want to damage the paint as it is nice enough to keep. Any ideas on how to get the remainder of the rust specs out? Can I remove the clear coat without damaging paint to get at them better?
Relatedly, I was thinking of cleaning up the rest of the paint and then applying Spraymax 2K to seal everything. Any experience on spraymax and old original paint?
