There WERE some changes with the early sidecovers.
I don't have all the details, so I'll just post what i have.

In this old Euro parts manual excerpt, the 70-72 sidecovers (#10 & #11) all have the same base '256' part numbers, with a -01 revision, apparently superceeding the unknown -00 original. The -?? suffixes are supposed to be just paint codes.

This Parts Bulletin shows changes to the early '70 sidecover bolt.

Thanks for the info TooManyXS1Bs.
Ok it looks like all the side covers from XS1-XS2 are the same.
Never seen side cover bolt with a clip hole in it.
I have been told by guys that owned these bikes in there day that they have had a side cover come off or a side cover bolt work loose.

Hi 2M
The XS1 side covers did differ.
I recall that the hole diameter was different.
I will see if I can find one on the weekend.

View attachment early_XS1.pdfHere is a photo of the early XS1 side cover bolt etc.
The side cover has a smaller diameter hole to suit the smaller diameter bolt.
I only found this type of bolt on my low serial number XS1.
Later XS1 XS1B XS1F XS2 TX650 had a larger diameter hole in the side cover and a larger diameter neck on the bolt.
However the thread size is the same for all types of bolts.

What is the thickness of the unthreaded part of the bolt?
