Mine is pretty original, has a good barn petina. It's not super pretty, but it was free. I wouldn't even know what to ask for it.
Free? Guess I got took I had to pay $200 for a pair of XS650's with an XS400 thrown in as the guy wanted to clean out his shed. Then I bought the 1978 for $75.00 other than a wiring harness that had been made into a rats nest of wiring it was 90% complete. All my XS650s have been rough looking from abuse but still like them.Mine is pretty original, has a good barn petina. It's not super pretty, but it was free. I wouldn't even know what to ask for it.
Original XSs are going to be hard to find someday soon.

No title, no idea if it runs, and half chopped. I think the price is a bit high.
Maybe he spent $300 on pb blaster
They already are. Maybe a lot depends on the part of the country you live in, but around here, they are rare. I know a lot of guys want to build custom bikes and that is certainly their choice, but the pool of unmolested original bikes is shrinking rapidly. They went from being a dime a dozen to being very hard to find seemingly overnight. When I was looking for the one that was my 60th birthday present , I had to expand my search to a four state area, and wound up buying one from out of state. ( I overpaid for a bike that was promised to be more than it was! )
I see a parallel to early Volkswagens, they were once so common, you couldn’t swing a dead cat without hitting three of them. Then they started getting cut up to make dune buggies and sand rails or just wound up in the junk yards. Have you priced a vintage original condition VW bug these days? Did you ever think you would see the day that an underpowered VW bus could cost as much as a house?
There are four for sale in the Phoenix area right now for $40,000 or more! Such as this one.

Such is the nature of supply and demand.
All that being said, Yamahas are still are not investment material, just a fun if expensive hobby.
Hi Mailman,
and where can you buy a house for $40K, eh?
nowhere I'd want to live.
Just paid Cdn$230K for a small bungalow in Saskatoon.
I have a 1978 with title and it runs all lights works and horn goes beep and I'd be awful tempted to sell it for that price! I only see a hand full of parts there other than a possible good core for an engine overhaul. If the right side exhaust is there and looks as nice as the left looks I'd offer a few dollars for that!https://seattle.craigslist.org/tac/mcy/d/77-xs650-twin-yamaha/6604445719.html

And I like that the poster is spending all his time writing about the various appeals of the XS650 and nothing about the actual condition of the bike or if it has a title!https://vancouver.craigslist.ca/rds/mcy/d/yamaha-1971-xs-650-vintage/6601096826.html
I think the seller was originally taking offers at $3500, but has since dropped the asking price to $2000.
Not sure what is going on with the headlight and the handle bars...
Prices can be a little nutty in here in BC.
