starter button

Hi everyone. I have an 81 special I have been replacing missing parts and getting into working condition. I have almost everything fixed to be able to get it on the road, but I have left one thing till last because I have been able to kickstart the bike so easily, and that is the electric start. I'm to a point now where I'd like to just hit the button and continue on my way if I happen to kill the engine while riding. Just as a starting point here is what it looks like under the right side cover. Can anyone tell from the picture what might be missing? Sorry for the foggy picture. I think the lens fogged up when I took it out side.

it looks like you are missing the starter solenoid.

You were right. Found one on ebay for $20.00.

I always replace those with ford solenoids from autozone. the ford solenoids are tough as rocks.

So how often do they need to be replaced, and will any 12 volt solenoid work?

rarely? They are a pretty simple part. So long as your new one is the right type (normally open), you can use pretty much anything.

Sometimes they just stick. The common first attempt at diagnosis is to hit them with something that doesn't break em =)
