Single phase alternator design is very old technology. That was replaced with 3 phase alternators many, many decades ago. Even our 1970's XS650 use 3 phase technology. 3 phase stators produce a smoother (less ripple) DC voltage after the rectification.
In this day and age, I don't know why anyone would buy a single phase alternator.
