Swingarm Compatability

On the 74 up swing arms the difference between drum and disc was the brake stay mount. There are other differences but no because of the brakes. From 74 up to 78-79 they used a swing arm with an open rear where the axle is. They added a steel piece for the axle adjusters to push on. The later bikes used a closed loop at the axle.
I think they di this because the older bikes had mufflers that came back past the axle. This made pulling the axle very hard to do. The steel plate that closed the loop can be un bolted from the swing arm. This lets you pull the wheel with out pulling the axle. Just loosen the axle adjusters, loosen axle, slide forward remove chain. Now you pull the bolt that holds the steel plate in then slide the wheel back and out.
On the later bikes with the shorter exhaust, you have room to remove the axle. This let them use the closed loop axle plates that were cheaper to build than the open with the steel plates.
