Just bought a 1980 XS 650 special 2, bike runs really good but there is a lot of ticking coming from the top end. Its my first 650 so I don't know if thats normal. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to do those things in the proper order.
Set cam chain tension.
Set valves.
Check timing.

Do all that, and yes you can hear the valves on an XS650, it's part of the charm. There can be some other clicking noises that aren't so benign though.

I was having a similar issue. Seems that my exhaust valve clearance was a little high. Brought it back to 0.006 and it's good.

.003 intake,.006 exhaust works good. Loose enough for good lubrication, yet not so loose as to be noisy.
