So I just got my '74 cafe on the road this summer and have been fighting a bunch of oil leaks here and there. Was having a heck of time tracing them and was worried that I had a head gasket leak.
So, my buddy who is an aircraft mechanic comes over and shares with me this:
oil glows under blacklight!!!
So, we cleaned off the motor with some carb cleaner, ran for a couple minutes then shut off the lights in my garage and fired up the small black light my wife got for finding pet stains in the carpet.
This worked like a charm. We tracked a major leak to the cam seal and found a couple others I had missed.
So, nice to know my headgasket looks pretty good and have tightened up everything else I missed during the initial build.
