Bought a 79 xs to make a tribute bike that I chopped in 1972. Owner told me he would drop off the title within 2 weeks. Surprise ! Bike has been through 3 owners and nobody knows where the title is. LView attachment 90670 ooking for a clean title and neck or just a title.**

**Thanks to all of your responses. Loaded with information. I will be on the road soon. Awesome site. Good people.

Was the title actually in the name of the previous owner? If so, he may be able to get a replacement title.

You can check the national vehicle registry viahttps://www.vehiclehistory.gov/nmvtis_vehiclehistory.html
That site links to several companies that provide the data.
I’ve used this one:http://www.titlecheck.us
If the bike isn’t in the database, then its been a long time since it was last titled.
If its there, they charge $4.95 for the info that includes the state+date where it was last titled.

You can also check the national insurance company database of stolen vehicles here:https://www.nicb.org/theft_and_fraud_awareness/vincheck/

If you don’t find a problem, then an option would be to register the bike in Vermont.
You would need a Bill of Sale & can do the entire process via the mail.
Let us know if you decide to do this, and I’ll provide more info.
